Changing column and row size in Excel

Change the size of one column or row
  • Drag a column/row border
  • Double-click a column/row border to AutoFit the column/row to the correct width/height.

When it comes time to change the width of more than one column or row, it gets just slightly trickier. Typically, when columns have numbers, you want the columns to have the same width; whereas when columns have text, you want each column to be 'just wide enough' for the text the column.

Change the size of multiple columns or rows of numbers (same width)

Select the columns or rows using the column headers and row headers (the letters A, B, C... and the numbers 1, 2, 3...).

  1. Point to one of the borders (the dark lines between the headings)
  2. Drag the border to set the appropriate size.
  3. It doesn't really matter which column's or row's border you drag--all selected columns will inherit the same width.

Change the size of multiple columns of text (different width)

Select the columns or rows using the column headers and row headers (the letters A, B, C... and the numbers 1, 2, 3...).

  1. Point to one of the borders (the dark lines between the headings)
  2. Double-click the border.
  3. The AutoFit (double-click) will apply to each column/row individually, so each will be sized according to its content.
